Orvis Battenkill Click

Description:

Some things in fly fishing dont need to be reinvented they just need to be done right. The Orvis Battenkill has been a click-and-pawl reel in various forms since the 1960s, and for good reason: there is a style of fishing where the drag system is beside the point, where the connection between angler and fish runs through the palm of the hand, and where the unmistakable sound of a singing click reel is half the pleasure of the sport. The Battenkill Click was built for that style.

Updated for 2024 with tightened tolerances, a redesigned curved reel foot, and two new colorways Silver and Bronze the latest Battenkill Click carries the character of the original into its next decade without changing what made it work. The frame is machined from 6061-T6 aircraft aluminum, keeping the reel featherlight across all three sizes (3.4 to 4.1 oz) for perfect balance on light freshwater rods. The internally adjusted four-position click-and-pawl drag system leaves the exterior of the reel completely clean no external knob, no exposed adjustment mechanism, just the smooth lines of a classically proportioned reel.

The standard arbor stays true to traditional reel proportions, pairing naturally with bamboo, fiberglass, and modern Superfine glass rods where a large imposing spool would look out of place. The ported spool design pays homage to Battenkill reels of past decades while providing ventilation for faster drying. The ergonomic Delrin handle is comfortable in the hand, and switching retrieve direction requires no tools.

Available in three sizes covering 1-weight through 7-weight applications in Silver and Bronze, the 2024 Battenkill Click is backed by Orviss unconditional guarantee. It is one of the best-sounding clickers on the market at its price point, one of the lightest fully machined aluminum reels available under $200, and a proven companion for anyone who wants to keep things beautifully simple on the water.

FAQ

Who is the Orvis Battenkill Click for?
The Battenkill Click is for trout anglers who want the experience and sound of a classic click-and-pawl reel at an accessible price point without spending $500+ for an Abel TR or Hardy Featherweight. It's the natural choice for anglers pairing light rods (bamboo, fiberglass, or modern Superfine glass) with a vintage-inspired setup, for beginners building their first trout outfit, for guides who want an affordable loaner reel, and for experienced anglers who love the tactile, hands-on fishing style that only a click reel delivers.

What is a click-and-pawl drag, and how does the Battenkill's work?
A click-and-pawl drag uses a spring-loaded metal pawl that engages a toothed gear on the spool to create resistance and produce the characteristic clicking sound. The Battenkill Click features a four-position internal adjustment changed by rotating a small block inside the frame with the spool removed which keeps the exterior completely clean with no external drag knob. The four settings provide increasing check pressure, while the primary fish-fighting control comes from palming the exposed rim of the spool.

What is the standard arbor design, and how does it compare to large-arbor reels?
The Battenkill Click uses a traditional standard arbor a narrower spool diameter true to classic reel proportions. Unlike large-arbor reels that retrieve over a foot of line per revolution, the Click III yields approximately 4.5 inches per turn. This is intentional: the Battenkill is purpose-built for freshwater trout fishing where fast line retrieval is rarely critical, and the narrower spool provides a compact, lightweight profile ideal for balancing light rods.

What does the curved reel foot do?
The 2024 redesign introduced a curved reel foot that conforms more naturally to the reel seat on most fly rods. This eliminates the tendency of leaders and fly line to catch and kink against a flat foot during line management a small but genuinely useful improvement over the previous design.

What are the downsides of the Orvis Battenkill Click?
The Battenkill Click has several real limitations to consider. First and most importantly, it is not made in the USA anglers who prioritize domestic manufacturing should look at the Abel TR or Galvan Rush Light instead. Second, spare spools are not available, limiting versatility for anglers who carry multiple line setups. Third, the standard arbor means significantly slower line retrieval than large-arbor reels (roughly 4.5" per turn vs. 12"+ on a modern large arbor), which can matter if a fish runs toward you. Fourth, the four-position drag cannot be adjusted while the spool is on the reel there is no on-the-fly drag increase short of palming the rim. Fifth, backing capacity is modest across all three sizes, making the Battenkill Click unsuitable for any species that makes long sustained runs. It is genuinely a freshwater trout reel and not appropriate beyond that application.
