Description:
What it is
The Hareline Odyssey Spider Vise is a fly-tying vise built around steel jaws and an aluminum C-clamp base for mounting to your bench. Its a true rotary vise with smooth 360-degree rotation, so you can spin the hook to see every side of the fly without taking it out of the jaws. The cam-lock jaw system gives a quick jaw throw and firm hook holding once you lock it down.
What to tie with it
Use the rotary function to wrap ribbing and wire with the hook shank turning under your thread, and to keep even tension when youre applying dubbing or building bodies. The cam-lock makes batch hook changes fast when youre tying multiples, and the firm grip helps when youre cinching materials down and dont want the hook to twist. Its also handy for checking proportions and alignment by rotating the fly as you tie.
Flies and the fish they're for
A vise doesnt get used by a specific pattern the way a feather or hair does, but this one is built for the kinds of flies where you benefit from full access and rotation while wrapping and finishing. That includes everything from small trout flies on typical trout-size hooks to larger shanks and streamer-style builds where you want to turn the fly to place materials evenly. In practice, its equally at home turning out trout flies for rivers and stillwaters, and bigger patterns for bass and inshore saltwater species when youre tying on larger hooks and shanks.
