Hareline Coq De Leon

Description:

What it is

Hareline Coq De Leon is a pack of Coq de Leon rooster hackle feathers in two half capes. The feathers run long with stiff, durable fibers that keep their shape while still giving a lifelike pulse in the water. They carry a natural sheen and they shed water easily, which helps on patterns that get fished hard or need to stay crisp.

What to tie with it

At the bench, this is a go-to for tails: dry fly tails, adult mayfly and spinner tails, and Euro nymph tails where you want stiff fibers that dont collapse. You can also use the longer feathers as palmer hackle over streamer bodies, or pick sections for articulated streamer tails and small fins on predator patterns. The common techniques are tailing with a small fiber bundle, wrapping as a palmered hackle, and building articulated sections with a trailing feather or fiber bunch.

Flies and the fish they're for

Perdigons are a classic use for Coq de Leon tails, and theyre fished for trout and grayling in fast rivers and pocket water where a slim nymph needs to sink and track cleanly. Seaducers can use Coq de Leon for hackle and tailing, and theyre commonly fished as a baitfish/shrimp-style streamer for saltwater species like redfish and seatrout on flats, marshes, and around docks. The same stiffness and durability that makes it a great nymph tailing feather also holds up well on predator streamers that get chewed.

How it compares

Compared to Hareline Mayfly Tails, Coq de Leon is the natural feather option; Mayfly Tails are a synthetic substitute thats rigid and sheds water, but no other feather matches Coq de Leons stiffness and range of options for nymph tails. Compared to Hareline India Hen Back patches, Coq de Leon has a similar look but the hen is more webby. Compared to the Whiting Coq de Leon Mayfly Tailing Pack, that Whiting pack runs stiffer with smaller fibers than a regular tailing pack.
