Hareline Hareline Hen Saddle

Description:

What it is

Hareline Hen Saddle is a pack of hen saddle feathers with a supple stem and soft, webby fibers. Those fibers breathe and pulse in the water, so even a simple wrap gives you natural movement without needing much else on the hook.

What to tie with it

Use the fibers for nymph tails and legs, and wrap the feather for soft hackle and wet fly collars. The webby, softer feather also works well as a streamer collar, along a streamer body, or for small Matuka-style wings and claws on crab and crayfish patterns. On the dry-fly side, its handy for feather-winged dry fly wings and spinner wings.

Flies and the fish they're for

Tie an Adams Dry Fly with hen feathers for the wing when you want a traditional feather-wing look; fish it for trout on rivers and spring creeks when theyre taking mayflies on the surface. For bigger meals, hen saddle can be worked into articulated patterns like the Feather Game Changer, where that soft, mobile feather helps sell the swimming profile for predatory fish like trout and bass in rivers and stillwaters.

How it compares

Compared with Indian Hen Back, hen saddle typically comes with smaller patches, less size variety, and more mottling.
