Hareline Pintail Flank Feathers

Description:

What it is

Hareline Pintail Flank Feathers are flank feathers from pintail, with long fibers and distinct dark barring. On the hook they give you that mottled, natural-looking feather profile that reads a lot like teal in the water. The fiber length makes them easy to sweep back and control into clean wing shapes.

What to tie with it

These are a go-to feather for wet fly and Spey-style wings, where you want a longer, barred slip or a paired wing that holds its shape. You can cut slips for matched wings, fold and roll them for traditional winging, or use smaller sections as accents in mixed wings. Flank feathers like this also see use on certain dry flies where a broad, flatter-topped feather is called for as an upright wing or wing post.

Flies and the fish they're for

The Fruit Stripe tube fly is a natural fit for this material, using the flank feather look in the wing for a classic salmon/steelhead-style presentation on rivers. More broadly, pintail-type flank feathers are also the kind of feather called for in Atlantic salmon mixed wings, which are fished for Atlantic salmon in river systems. In trout fishing, similarly mottled flank feathers are commonly chosen when you want that barred feather effect on wet flies and spiders that get swung or greased-and-drifted for trout in streams.

How it compares

Compared to mallard, pintail flank is darker and shows heavier barring, and its lighter than gadwall. Visually it sits close to a teal-like look, which can be handy when youre matching that mottled flank-feather vibe without reaching for teal.
