Hareline Soft Hackle

Description:

What it is

Hareline Soft Hackle here is a Tungsten Bead Soft Hackle Hares Ear-style fly built around a tungsten bead, flash ribbing, and a soft hackle collar. The tungsten makes it fast-sinking and deep-riding, while the soft hackle gives it that buggy texture and a lot of movement in the drift.

What to tie with it

Tie it as an emerging mayfly or emerging caddis imitation by building a Hares Ear-type body, counter-ribbing with flash for durability and shimmer, and then stroking and wrapping a soft, webby feather for the collar. Fish it dead-drift like a nymph, or let it swing at the end of the drift to make the hackle pulse. It also fits perfectly in a multiple soft-hackle rig where you want one fly to get down and still look alive.

Flies and the fish they're for

The Tungsten Bead Soft Hackle Hares Ear is a trout fly for rivers and tailwaters when fish are keying on emergers, and it earns its keep both drifted under an indicator and swung at the end of the run. The Hares Ear Nymph is the straight-ahead reference point for the same idea, fished for trout in streams and tailwaters as a mayfly/caddis-style searching nymph. In both cases the soft hackle version leans into that moving-collar trigger that can turn lookers into eaters during hatches.

How it compares

Compared with a standard Hares Ear Nymph, the soft hackle design is an adaptation that adds a pulsing collar for more movement, especially on the swing, while the tungsten bead keeps it in the deep, fast-sinking lane.
